Yes and… the second city split us into groups of 3 and gave us a letter for each - person a, person b, person c. Then they told us it was person a's birthday and we were having a party. Person a would tell b and c what kind of party they wanted, and b and c would respond with "Yes!" but…” and tear down part of the idea. Chaos resumed, with mild disappointment. Round 2 and it was person b's birthday. Same concept, but instead of "Yes!" but…” persons a and c were asked to answer “no, because…” and provide a reason for their refusal. Again, chaos. But this time more disappointment as every amazing party idea was shot down. Round 3: person c's birthday. Only this time, persons a and b responded to the party ideas with "Yes, and..." absolute chaos. What's the point of this? Everyone has email list experienced something different with their party planning:disappointment (person a) rejection (person b) excitement (person c) everything depended on listening to our partners. As humans, we usually choose "No" by default. The point is, we want to be more open and adaptable when listening to ideas. We don't want to hear 20% of an idea and tune email list out because we've already rejected it in our heads. "Yes, and" helps us listen to our customers, prospects and colleagues. If you're coming up with ideas, you'll be surprised at what you can come up with when you use these strategies to entertain ideas and iterate until you have something to work with. Use “yes, and” as an internal policy: "Yes" reminds you to listen to the full idea or sentence . Be open to this.
